Rey Mysterio Biography

Rey Mysterio
Born Oscar Gutierrez on the 11th of December 1974 in San Diego, California, Rey Mysterio is a professional Mexican American wrestler who currently wrestles on the SmackDown brand of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE.) He was previously known as Rey Misterio, Jr. when he wrestled for World Championship Wrestling (WCW). Despite having competed as a cruiserweight for the majority of his career, Mysterio is a former World Heavyweight Champion. He is also an eight time Cruiserweight Champion.
Mysterio has the distinction of a high flying style that helped launch the cruiserweight revolution in the United States of America during his time in the World Championship Wrestling. He began his training with his uncle Rey Misterio, Sr. At the age of fifteen, he made his wrestling debut in a tiny church in Tijuana, Mexico. Rey Mysterio was technically too young to receive a license at this time, but there was not a lot of enforcement. He started a feud with Psicosis, a wrestler who had also been trained by Misterio, and began to use the ring name Colibrí, which means “hummingbird” in Spanish. This feud would endure for many years, continuing even after Mysterio’s career had moved to the United States of America.
Once he turned eighteen, he was allowed to begin using the ring name Rey Misterio, Jr. by his uncle. He feuded in Asistencia Asesoria y Adminstracion with Juventud Guerrera. This included a match with both Rey Misterio Sr. and Jr. going against Guerrera and his father, Fuerza Guerrera.
In his debut match on Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), Mysterio would defeat Psicosis. This match was Mysterio’s first major impact in the world of American pro wrestling, despite the fact that he had previously been seen on the pay per view WCW When Worlds Collide match. Mysterio would from then on become one of the ECW’s main attractions, alongside a number of other luchadores. Later, Mysterio would appear on the first two ECW One Night Stand reunion shows.
Mysterio would go on to attain fame in World Championship Wrestling in the mid 90s. He became the flagship of the new Cruiserweight Revolution in the United States of America. At that point, his name was anglicized in to Mysterio. This aided in the marketing of him as a “mystery man.” He engaged in many famous battles with Ultimo Drago, Juventud Guerrera, Dean Malenko, Eddie Guerrero, Psicosis, and a host of others during this period. He would hold the WCW Cruiserweight Championship five times.
He made a significant impact in the WCW with his premiere Cruiserweight title reign. In October of 1997 at Halloween Havoc, Rey Mysterio would win the second Cruiserweight Championship from his real life friend Eddie Guerrero in a title vs. mask tournament. This tournament was widely acclaimed for both its fluency and technicality. It was later voted Match of the Year. At that point in time, Rey Mysterio was also on the WCW roster.
Eventually, Rey Mysterio lost the Cruiserweight title to Chris Jericho in early 1998.
